This was the year

The universe showed itself to me

First with a promise

Of love

Everyone has their own path

I see it over and over again. We fight to get a diagnosis from a doctor and then we have no idea how to accept the diagnosis. We wanted validation that what we were experiencing was real. But we didn’t know how much baggage was going to come with it.

Many of us go through stages of grief if it is said to be a chronic or life-long illness. It’s important to honor that.

Some of us lose our sense of identity. That is hard and painful, and while you are going through it, you deserve support and compassion. But…

The Journey of Reaching a Goal

It’s such an exciting feeling planning a trip. It starts out just the seed of an idea, a dream, a wish, and slowly it takes shape; researching flights, possible destinations, deciding which dates are best, looking at photos of the places to visit, and finally making the purchase. After that it's time to dig in and book places to stay each night, deciding how many days you need in each location and what you might want to see. …

Running into the storm

A herd of cattle is grazing peacefully on the plains of Oklahoma. The sky is darkening in the west and they can sense that a storm is coming. They begin to run to the East away from the storm, but the cows are not very fast.

The storm quickly catches up to them, drenching them with rain, but they continue to run on the muddy ground below. Eventually, the storm passes over and it's ahead of them so they can slow down and relax. All their running did was keep them in the storm longer than…

You are walking along a bright narrow path between tall grasses sprinkled with delicate wildflowers. It’s a warm day, and the sun is bright and blinding in the clear blue sky. The earth is soft beneath your feet, and as you approach the beach it begins to get sandy. You take off your shoes to feel the earth between your toes.

The sound of the sea washes over you, welcoming you to relax, and breathe deeper. You inhale the salty sea air and sigh with content. The smell of the sea is intoxicating. …

Once upon a time, there was a small herd of elephants living in the forest of Burma. Shawani was a young adult elephant and enjoyed spending her day roaming the forest looking for the most succulent leaves to munch on. One day, she came across a young puppy frolicking beneath a tree.

Shawani was full of love and joy for this tiny creature. They became fast friends. She called her friend Kuttal. The puppy grew up fast and while Shawani was much larger, Kuttal multiplied in size in a matter of months.

One day on their…

Ten years ago I never would have said I was grateful for depression and narcolepsy. I felt like they were ruining my life. I was the victim and there was nothing I could do about it.

But today I am living a completely different story. Depression and narcolepsy were catalysts that forced me to take a harder look at what I’m doing in life. Eventually, they propelled me to create a life worth living. It didn’t happen overnight and it wasn’t magic. But it has led me to live a magical life.

Diagnosed with Narcolepsy

But let’s start at the beginning. I have…

A mini-version of Golden Rock — Photo by author

Two years ago this week, I was with friends exploring Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, also called Golden Rock, on Thadingyut. Thadingyut is a famous festival but I don’t think anyone will be able to travel to celebrate it in 2020. Since this hasn’t exactly been a year of travel, I’ve been enjoying my Google Photos sharing with me where I was on this same day in the past. So let’s take a trip down memory lane.

How We Got to Golden Rock

Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (Golden Rock) is on the summit of Mount Kyayktiyo, about 15 km from a town called Kinpun and around 200km from Yangon, in Mon…
